0.0/5 rating (0 votes)

A Soviet painter and graphic artist. Born in 1893 in the town of Slobodsk. A member of the USSR Union of Artists. The author of genre and historical paintings, portraits, landscapes, still lives. Engaged in urban design for the revolutionary holidays, created propaganda posters.

At the graduation of the Sloboda Secondary Real School, Lupov entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (the MSPSA). His teachers were A. Arkhipov, A. Vasnetsov, N. Kasatkin, K. Korovin.   In 1917 he successfully graduated from the art school with the title of the 1-th Degree Artist, and received a trip abroad, which he could not take because of the events of that time.

From 1918 to 1923, he worked as a teacher of Graphic Arts in the town of Slobodsk, where he opened an art studio and a museum. In 1923 he came to Moscow, worked as a teacher of graphic arts at the Military Commanders Academy.

S. Lupov was a member of the Union of Artists since 1923, also a member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. A constant participant of the exhibitions of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. An exhibitor on the tenth anniversary of the Red Army. An exhibitor of almost all the exhibitions organized by the USSR Union of Artists.

The painting "The Woman Bather", written in 1916, was the first greater work of the young artist. Since it his way into the great art began, it was the work of the student's examination for the graduation from the art school. All subsequent years were years of hard work.  Lupov created hundreds of sketches and large paintings. The theme of his works were a creative work, the beauty and strength of the Soviet people, the young builders of socialism in the USSR. Many paintings were dedicated to the sports and public celebrations. A historical-revolutionary theme took a special place in his work.

In the 1910s, he worked in life ordinary style, later he worked in conservative traditions of socialist realism. He created large-scale, multi-images paintings, which were somewhat random in composition and not always convincing in drawing (this shortcoming was inherent to many artists  of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia, and apparently this fact is explained with a lack of time, haste and desire to quickly translate the idea into a finished product). His works included  "Odessa. The Longshoremen's Breakfast In The Port" (1924), "May Day in Odessa" (1925), "The Strike at Goujon Plant in 1905" (1925), "The Communist detachment in 1919" (1926), "Sports Games At The Stadium" ( 1927), "The Magneto Assembly Shop" (1936), "Water Station" (1937), "M. I. Kalinin At The Sickle and Hammer Plant in 1931" (1951, formerly was in the collection of the State Museum of Kalinin in Moscow).

In the 1950s, he tried his hand at the poster painting, performed sheets in social and sports themes: "In The Ranks of Sporting Youth" (1951), "Tennis and Table Tennis" (1952), "For The Skill In Basketball!" (1953).

Sergey Lupov worked in the portrait genre a lot, tended to choose female models. In 1956 he painted a portrait of Krutitskiy Metropolitan and Kolomna Nicholas, which is located in the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius.

His artworks are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Museum of Contemporary History of Russia (the former State Museum of Revolution of the USSR), the Central Museum of the Armed Forces of Russia, the Revolution Museum, the National Library of Belarus; in the galleries in Bryansk, Irkutsk, Kostroma, Kurgan, Orel, Saratov, Penza, Taganrog, Chelyabinsk, Almaty, Odessa, Nukus.
