Graduated from the V. I. Surikov State Art Institute in Moscow (1944-1950). Student with S. V. Gerasimov. Distinguished Artist of the RSFSR (1970), People’s Artist of the USSR (1988). Was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1985) for a cyclus of pictures about the Moscow Kremlin: “Golden Kremlin Hill”, “Centuries pass over the Kremlin”, “Sun above Red Square”, “Palace Square”. Received the Gold medal of the Academy of Fine Arts of Italy (1979) for the series “Slavic Portraits”. Corresponding member of the Academy of Fine Arts of the USSR (1988) Fully fledged member of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts (1995).

Cooperated with “Detgiz”, illustrated the books: “There it is, Spring!”, Stories and Poems by German writers (1954); “Morning in the Gobi” (Travel notes, author E. L. Andreev, 1955); “Selected Stories” (author E. T. Birzniek, Upit, 1952).

From 1971 on First Secretary of the Artists’ Union of the RSFSR. One of the outstanding representatives of the “harsh style” (in the 1960s).
