He studied at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (MUZHVZ). He was close in style to the artists of the Makovec Group, namely NM Chernyshev, which he maintained friendly relations. In 1924, Shestakov joined the Moscow Painters Community together with the former members of "Jack of Diamonds". The founders are PP Konchalovsky, AV Kuprin, AV Lentulov, II Mashkov, AA Osmerkin, VV Rozhdestvensky, RR Falk. In 192, he joined the Amalgamated Society of Moscow artists (OMH). Members of the OMH are SV Gerasimov, IE Grabar, AD Drevin, AV Kuprin AA Lebedev-Shuisky, AV Lentulov, AA Osmerkin, NA Udaltsova, RR Falk, AV Fonvizin, NI Shestakov, et al. In June 1917, N Shestakov together with P Konchalovsky, I Mashkov, A Lentulov headed the Art Commission of the Feminine Union "The Help to the Motherland". In the 20s, he created primarily in the manner of Moscow Cezannism, still lifes, landscapes, portraits were in style close to the artists of "Jack of Diamonds" and especially to VV Rozhdestvensky. He also taught at VHUTEMAS with Osmerkin, Mashkov, Konchalovsky. Among his students were I Chekmazov V Favorskaja, A Chirkov, B Jordansky, et al. In 1919, the Russian avant-garde masters’ works were transferred from the Department of Fine Arts to the funds of Simbirsk Art Museum, the works of Larionov, Goncharova, Rozanova , Nivinsky, NI Shestakov, and others.
