“In Varichev’s landscapes the “log-cabin” Russia lives, quiet, as though listening to itself, scrutinizing itself, scrutinizing its fields, groves, expansive rivers – a Russia shadowed by Russian birch trees, ancient cathedrals. These landscapes, painted in the old Ladoga, in the Tverskaya Province, in the Vologda Region, unpretentious in their motives, honest, steeped in poetry – are the artist Varichev’s low-key, affectionate song of his native soil”.
