Born in New Borisov, the Minsk Province. Painter, graphic artist, author of watercolor paintings, lithographs, portraits. In 1923-1929, he studied in VHUTEMAS-VHUTEIN (Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops, the Graphic Faculty) at N.N.Kupreyanov and V.A. Favorsky's. He participated in many exhibitions since 1925. In 1929, he joined the society "4 Arts", in 1931 joined the SEA (Society of Easel Artists), was a member of Moscow Regional Public Organization "Union of Artists" since 1932. Illustrated books of Goslitizdat, Detgiz and other publishing houses (illustrated about 60 books). Illustrated editions of magazines "Godless at the bench" (1926-1930), "The Art of the Masses," "Red Field" (1929).

In 1930, he toured the Jewish collective farms in Ukraine, Crimea and Birobidzhan. In 1939, he painted a mural for the pavilion "Far East" at the Agricultural Exhibition. Became famous as an illustrator of works by Jewish writers and poets, including Sholem Aleichem, P.Markish, Isaac Babel, I.-L.Perets, Mendele Moykher-Sforim.

He taught at the Art Institutes (Leningrad Higher Art and Technical Institute (1929-1931), Moscow Art Institute (1937-1941). His works are presented at Pushkin's Moscow State Museum of Fine Arts, the State Tretyakov Gallery, Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, and other museums in the former Soviet Union.
